Properties of cotton fabrics — why 100% Co?

100% cotton (Co) is a natural fiber with 5 properties that determine its dominance in clothing: hygroscopicity absorbs sweat and maintains skin comfort, breathability regulates body temperature throughout the day. Cotton is hypoallergenic, non-static, and resistant to burning — it does not melt on contact with heat like polyester.

Yes — 100% cotton is cotton. The designation “Co” or “Cotton 100%” on the fabric label confirms a composition exclusively of cellulosic cotton fibers, without synthetic admixture. This distinguishes it from CVC (55% Co / 45% Pes) or TC (35% Co / 65% Pes), where the polymer content changes the performance properties.

The only significant drawback of cotton — its susceptibility to creasing — results from the natural cellulosic properties of the fiber. Sapor Textile eliminates this with two processes: Liquid Ammonia (LA) increases the durable press (DP) rating to 2.5–3.5 on a 5-point scale, and Natural Stretch gives the fabric up to 10% elasticity through special yarn spinning — without any elastane in the composition. Types of cotton fabrics — 9 weaves

What are the names of apparel cotton fabrics? Sapor Textile offers 9 weaves of 100% Co — each defines a different visual character, hand, and application for finished garments.

Poplin (Popelina, plain weave 1/1)
smooth, slightly ribbed surface, a base for shirts and blouses. What is the difference between poplin and regular cotton? Poplin is cotton in a specific 1/1 weave — cotton itself is a fiber, poplin is a finished fabric with this structure. Available from 90 g/m².
Cotton Sateen (sateen, satin weave)
delicate sheen on the right side of the fabric. What is cotton sateen? It is a 100% Co fabric in a satin weave, where long threads create a smooth, shiny surface. Sapor Textile offers 100% Co sateen (K647A) with a weight of 120 g/m² and 70/1 yarn.
Twill (twill weave 2/1 or 3/1)
visible diagonal lines, soft drape. Casual character — day shirts, blouses, streetwear collections, and informal wear.
Oxford and Royal Oxford
basket weave with a thicker, distinct texture. Oxford is the choice for corporate and tender shirts; royal oxford has a more pronounced structural pattern.
Dobby and Herringbone
jacquard weaves with a pattern embedded directly into the fabric structure. Herringbone is one of the most fashionable dobby variants — a distinct V-shaped texture without additional printing.
Cotton Flannel
fabric brushed on one side (one-side brushing) or both sides (two-sides brushing). Soft, skin-friendly, seasonal — autumn/winter shirts and oversized blouses for cold weather.
Cotton Jersey
standard finishes for office and formal blouses with a predominance of cotton. EC facilitates daily maintenance of the finished blouse, ETI reduces ironing time. Standard for corporate and uniform apparel.

Cotton fabric weights — how to choose for application

The weight of apparel cotton fabric ranges from 90 to 250 g/m² — the choice depends on the application and season. Too low a weight for a formal shirt will result in a sheer effect; too high for a summer blouse — thermal discomfort.

90–120 g/m² — summer shirts, light blouses

The lightest apparel cotton fabrics. Cotton sateen 120 g/m² with 70/1 yarn — a noble hand with minimal weight. 100% Co poplin from 90 g/m² — breathable, ideal for summer shirts and light formal blouses.

120–150 g/m² — formal shirts, office blouses

Optimal range for all-season shirts. Poplin and sateen in this weight ensure full opacity, proper drape, and all-day wearing comfort.

150–250 g/m² — flannel, workwear, and seasonal apparel

What are the best cotton fabrics for autumn and winter? Cotton flannel 150–250 g/m² — brushed, soft, thermally insulating. Heaviest weights for flannel shirts, workwear, and casual winter collections.

Technical Finishes

Sapor Textile offers 8 finishes for 100% Co cotton fabrics — from standard Easy Care to ammonia processes available only in a few factories worldwide. The finish determines color fastness, hand, and ease of care.
Mercerization
all Sapor Textile cotton fibers undergo mercerization before dyeing. What is cotton mercerization? A process of treating the fiber with caustic soda under tension — effects: higher luster, deeper dye absorption (saturated, durable colors), and higher mechanical strength than unmercerized cotton.
Liquid Ammonia (LA, LA+Precure, LA+Moisture)
an advanced, non-carcinogenic chemical process performed in selected factories worldwide. Cotton finished with LA achieves DP 2.5–3.5 — it returns to shape after washing without intensive ironing, while maintaining the full ecological properties of natural fiber.
Natural Stretch
up to 10% elasticity in 100% cotton without elastane. Special spinning of cotton yarn gives the fabric resilience — a shirt or blouse adapts to the body without restricting movement.
Easy Care (EC) / Easy to Iron (ETI)
the most popular finishes for cotton with a predominance of Co. EC facilitates daily maintenance of finished garments, ETI reduces ironing time — standard for office apparel.
Peach Effect
mechanical brushing of the surface, a “peach skin” effect. Fabric with a velvety touch — popular in premium women’s blouses and casual shirts.
Silky Touch
silk imitation, luxurious and delicate hand. Cotton with Silky Touch feels like silk, while offering the durability and ease of care of cotton.

Applications of apparel cotton fabrics

What are the best cotton fabrics? The answer depends on the application — Sapor Textile supplies cotton material for 4 apparel segments.
Men’s and Formal Shirts
100% Co poplin and sateen, 120–150 g/m², Easy Care or Liquid Ammonia finish. Oxford and Royal Oxford for corporate and institutional tender shirts.
Women’s Blouses
cotton sateen 120 g/m² or CO/EL poplin, Peach Effect or Silky Touch finish for the premium segment. Natural Stretch for slim-fit cuts without elastane in the composition.
Formal Wear and Fashion Collections
twill, dobby, herringbone – noble hand, plasticity, and possibility of dyeing in many colors

Workwear and Seasonal Apparel

cotton flannel 150–250 g/m², brushed on one side or both sides. Work shirts and winter blouses for industry, gastronomy, and casual collections.

Premium Technologies — for demanding B2B clients

Two-ply yarns (40/2–160/2)
double-twisted cotton yarns. The higher the number, the finer the yarn and the more noble the character of the fabric. Two-ply ensures plasticity, resilience, and the fabric’s return to shape without ironing.
Oil Resistant
stain-resistant finish minimizing the absorption of fats and liquids. For event blouses, gastronomic apparel, and shirts in conditions of intensive use.
Long Lasting White / Jet Black
special color versions with enhanced durability of white and depth of black. For formal collections requiring color stability throughout the season of use.
Flannel one-side / two-sides brushing
the degree of brushing determines the softness of the fabric. Two-sided brushing gives maximum softness on both sides — standard for premium flannel shirts.
